The Arado Ar 196 was the most successful seaplane used by the German Air Force and Navy during the Second World War; it was the standard shipborne catapult seaplane of the German Navy, and was widely operated from coastal bases. The primary duty of the Arado 196 was coastal reconnaissance and patrol although as the war progressed, it was employed in the anti-submarine and convoy escort roles and even for attacking the Whitleys of R.A.F.

Prototype Information: Grumman J2F-6 Duck Amphibious Biplane Designed as a utility plane for the US Navy the Duck first flew in 1933. Production of the J2F-6 began in 1943 and featured improved aerodynamics and was suitable for use in many roles: target tug, reconnaissance, anti-sub patrol, and, perhaps best known, as a search and rescue aircraft.
